Polyethylene terephthalate

PET packaging manufacturersPET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) plastic is a durable yet lightweight, transparent material used for food packaging applications. Not only recyclable and safe to use for this purpose, it is also eco-friendly due to being composed of an injection moulding polymer chain made up of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid bonded together into one polymer chain; PET’s market is set to increase due to its unique properties as well as rising consumer awareness about safe plastic use for food & beverage packaging products.

PET plastic has the advantages of high transparency, durability and resistance to moisture, alcohols and solvents that make it suitable for outdoor applications such as packaging and films & sheets. Furthermore, its stiffness allows it to be formed into different forms for moulding purposes – the packaging segment accounting for the greatest share in 2018. The market can be broken down by application, such as films & sheets; packaging being the most dominant market segment.

Production process

PET plastic is an exceptionally flexible material for food and beverage containers, electronics, automobile parts and textiles. It’s lightweight, strong, recyclable and resistant to outside air, chemicals and liquid penetration – yet it can remain resilient under diverse temperatures and environmental conditions.

The production process involves injecting plastic pellets into a machine using high heat and pressure, melting them to form a molten state and creating what is known as a preform, which looks similar to an expanded test tube and already features bottle cap threads moulded on. The next step involves inflating this preform using stretch blow moulding technology until finally becoming bottles with the final shape of their final form.

Compared to other polymers, PET doesn’t break down when exposed to oxygen, making it suitable for holding more liquid than competing packaging materials and withstanding freezing and oven-baking temperatures without degrading over time. This feature enables PET to hold onto its shape over extended periods effectively.

As opposed to glass, PET is lighter and offers a superior capacity-to-weight ratio. Furthermore, PET consumes significantly less energy and fuel in production and transportation than other packaging materials, allowing manufacturers to pack more into smaller packages by lowering shipping and storage costs. Additional advantages of PET include its recyclability, durability, low environmental impact and varied colour and design options that meet consumer preferences.

Properties

PET plastic is a crystal clear and shatterproof plastic commonly used for packaging various consumable goods. Its chemical resistance, high strength-to-weight ratio, and ability to be manufactured in various colours make PET an ideal material for bottle and jar packaging – with health authorities globally verifying its use with food, beverage, personal care and pharmaceutical products.

Using thermoplastic techniques, including blow moulding, PET plastic can be easily formed into bottles and sheets. Furthermore, colourants, UV blockers, oxygen barriers and CO2 scavengers may be added for tailored packaging based on specific requirements. In addition, PET may also be blended with other thermoplastics and thermosets to tailor materials with improved performance and cost profiles.

PET bottles are highly reliable and safe, making them a preferred option for carbonated drinks. Their sturdy construction, low moisture absorption rates, and superior dimensional stability make PET an excellent choice to advertise their product visually while its barrier properties protect contents against contamination by germs.

PET plastic is recyclable, boasting an advantageous sustainability profile compared to glass and aluminium products. Production requires less energy; usage reduces fuel usage for transporting, while PET’s resistance to abrasion and puncture makes it highly suitable.

Applications

PET packaging manufacturers are an incredibly flexible and affordable material suitable for food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, personal care products and household cleaners. PET can be easily formed into bottles and containers for food products like beverages and pharmaceuticals or thermoformed into sheet and tray packaging forms. PET is a transparent yet durable material that can be enhanced with UV blockers, oxygen barriers or scavengers to meet product-specific requirements; hence its popularity among bottlers worldwide.
